Three Ways to Watch IPTV on a Computer

All three are free to start and work on both Windows and macOS, apart from the dedicated players, which differ by system.

Before you start: have your login details ready. VLC and Kodi use the M3U link; dedicated players can usually take either the M3U link or Xtream details. No login yet? Get a free 24-hour test line first.

Option 1 · VLC

Watch IPTV in VLC in Two Minutes

  1. Download VLC media player from the official VideoLAN website and install it. It's free and has no ads.
  2. Windows: open VLC and choose Media › Open Network Stream (or press Ctrl+N).
Mac: choose File › Open Network (or press Cmd+N).
  3. Paste your M3U link into the box and click Play.
  4. The first channel starts. Open the playlist to pick another: View › Playlist on Windows (Ctrl+L), or Window › Playlist on Mac.

Good to know: VLC is a media player, not a TV app, so there's no programme guide and the channel list is one long list. It's perfect for checking that everything works, then many people move on to Option 2.

Use a Dedicated IPTV Player for Everyday Viewing

A proper player gives you a channel list grouped by category, a TV guide, favourites, and separate sections for films and series.

On Windows: MyIPTV Player

  1. Open the Microsoft Store, search for MyIPTV Player and install it.
  2. Go to Settings and choose Add new playlist and EPG source.
  3. Give it a name, paste your M3U link under remote channel list, and add the EPG link if we sent you one.
  4. Select the playlist you just added and open Channels.

On Mac: IPTVX

  1. Open the Mac App Store, search for IPTVX and install it.
  2. Choose to add a playlist, pick Xtream Codes, and paste the server URL, username and password.
  3. Save, and the channels, guide and on-demand sections load.

Use IPTVX on your iPhone too? It runs across Apple devices, and our iPhone & Apple TV guide covers the mobile and TV versions.

Option 3 · Kodi

Set Up IPTV in Kodi With PVR IPTV Simple Client

Kodi is a free, open-source media centre. It takes a little longer to set up, but rewards you with a full-screen, remote-friendly TV interface.

  1. Download Kodi from the official kodi.tv website and install it.
  2. Open Add-ons › Install from repository › Kodi Add-on repository › PVR clients.
  3. Select PVR IPTV Simple Client and click Install.
  4. Open it again and choose Configure. Under the general settings, paste your M3U link as the playlist URL.
  5. In the EPG settings, add the guide link we provided.
  6. Close settings and enable the add-on, then restart Kodi. Your channels appear under TV on the home screen.

Note: Kodi itself doesn't include any channels. Only install add-ons from the official Kodi repository, as shown above; third-party add-ons are a common source of malware.

Fix Stutter and Buffering on a PC or Mac

  • Raise VLC's network cachingIn Tools › Preferences, switch to All settings, open Input / Codecs and increase Network caching from 1000 ms to around 3000 ms. A small delay buys a much steadier picture.
  • Turn on hardware decodingIn the same Input / Codecs section, set hardware-accelerated decoding to Automatic. It eases the load on older laptops and keeps fans quieter.
  • Pause big downloads and cloud syncOneDrive, iCloud, Dropbox and game updates can quietly use your bandwidth while you watch.
  • Plug in a network cableMost desktops have an Ethernet port; many laptops can use a cheap USB adapter.

Make the Most of IPTV on Your Computer

Keep the video on top

In VLC, View › Always on top (Windows) or Video › Float on Top (Mac) keeps a small match window above your work.

Send it to the big screen

Connect your laptop to the TV with an HDMI cable. For a permanent setup, a TV device is easier; see our Firestick and Android TV guides.

Full screen in one key

Press F in VLC, or double-click the video, to go full screen. Press Esc to return.

Mind your plan's screens

Watching on a laptop counts as a connection like any other device. Close the player when you're done if other people at home are watching too.

FAQ

Windows & Mac IPTV: FAQs

Can I watch IPTV on a laptop without installing anything?

You need at least one player app. VLC is the lightest option: a small, free download that plays your M3U link straight away.

Why doesn't VLC show a TV guide?

VLC is a general media player, so it plays streams but doesn't read programme guides. For a TV guide, use a dedicated player such as MyIPTV Player or IPTVX, or Kodi.

Is IPTV on a Mac the same as on an iPhone?

Very similar. Several Apple players, IPTVX among them, run on both, so the steps feel familiar if you've already set up your iPhone.

Does IPTV work on a Chromebook?

Most Chromebooks can install Android apps from Google Play, so the players from our Android TV guide work there too.

How fast does my internet need to be?

For HD, a steady connection of around 10 Mbps is comfortable. 4K channels need much more. Stability matters more than headline speed, which is why a cable often helps.

Is Kodi legal to use?

Yes. Kodi is free, open-source software. What matters is where content comes from, which is why we recommend only the official Kodi repository.

Test It on Your Laptop Today

Request a test line, paste it into VLC, and you'll be watching within two minutes. The line runs a full day and costs nothing.
