Google TV or Android TV: What's the Difference?

Same system underneath, different home screen. The apps and steps in this guide work on both.

Hisense owners: some Hisense TVs run Google TV and some run Hisense's own VIDAA system. If your TV has no Google Play, it's VIDAA, and the simplest route is a streaming stick. See our Firestick IPTV guide.

Why it's easier

Why Android TV Is the Simplest Way to Watch IPTV

▶️

Apps straight from Google Play

TiviMate is listed in the Play Store, so there's no developer menu to unlock and nothing to sideload, unlike on a Firestick.

🔑

Log in on the TV itself

No MAC address or website step as on Samsung and LG apps. You type your login once, directly into the player.

⚡

Strong hardware

Devices like the Nvidia Shield and Google TV Streamer switch channels quickly and handle large playlists with ease.

Step 1

Install TiviMate From Google Play

  1. Google TV: go to the Apps tab, then choose Search for apps.
Android TV: open the Google Play Store tile and select the search icon.
  2. Type TiviMate, or press the microphone button on the remote and say it.
  3. Select TiviMate IPTV Player and press Install.
  4. When it's done, choose Open.

Prefer something else? IPTV Smarters is another popular option. Search for it the same way, and if it isn't listed in your region, TiviMate is the better choice anyway.

Step 2

Set Up Your Phone as a Keyboard

This step is optional, but it turns two minutes of remote-control typing into ten seconds.

  1. Install the free Google TV app on your phone (Android or iPhone).
  2. Make sure the phone and TV are on the same Wi-Fi, then tap the remote button in the app and pick your TV.
  3. Enter the code that appears on your TV to pair them.
  4. Whenever a text box is open on the TV, tap the keyboard icon in the app and paste your login details.

Nvidia Shield or Android box? The Google TV app works with most Android TV devices too. Many boxes also accept a cheap wireless keyboard plugged into USB.

Step 3

Add Your Login in TiviMate

  1. On TiviMate's welcome screen, choose Add playlist.
  2. Pick Xtream codes. Compared with a plain M3U link, it fetches the list quicker and files films and series separately.
  3. Fill in the server address, username and password from your welcome message, then select Next.
  4. TiviMate shows how many channels, films and series it found. That count means your login works. Select Next, name the playlist and choose Done.

No login yet? Grab our IPTV 24 hour free trial to get a working line to add here within a minute, without entering any payment details.

Step 4

Fine-Tune TiviMate for a Smoother Picture

You're already watching. Two minutes in TiviMate's settings make a real difference:

  1. Buffer size: under Settings › Playback, raise it a notch if a channel occasionally stutters. A bigger buffer trades a second of delay for steadier playback.
  2. TV guide refresh: under Settings › EPG, set it to update once a day.
  3. Hide unused groups: under Settings › Playlists, open your playlist and untick the groups you'll never watch.
  4. Favourites: long-press OK on a channel and add it to Favourites for a short, personal list.

Tips for Your Specific Android TV Device

Chromecast with Google TV

It has limited storage, so keep only the apps you use. It has no network socket, but a USB-C hub with Ethernet gives it a wired connection.

Google TV Streamer

Has an Ethernet port built in. Plug in a cable for the most stable picture during live sport.

Nvidia Shield

The fastest Android TV device around. Ideal for very large playlists and 4K channels, and it has Ethernet as standard.

Sony, TCL, Philips & Hisense Google TVs

Entry-level models have less memory. Close other apps before watching, and turn off home-screen previews if the TV feels slow.

Generic Android boxes

Quality varies a lot. If yours has no Google Play, or runs a very old Android version, a Google TV Streamer is a worthwhile upgrade.

Android phones and tablets

The same Play Store apps work on phones. Install IPTV Smarters or TiviMate and log in the same way to watch on the go.

Keep it fast

Keep Your Google TV Running Quickly

  • Try Apps only mode. On Google TV, Settings › Accounts & profiles › your account › Apps only mode removes the recommendation rows. The home screen loads faster and uses less memory.
  • Clear cache, not data. Settings › Apps › your player › Clear cache. "Clear data" would wipe your playlist.
  • Restart every week or so. Hold the power button on the remote and choose Restart, or unplug for 30 seconds.
  • Keep apps updated. Turn on auto-update in Google Play so your player always has the latest fixes.

FAQ

Android TV & Google TV IPTV: FAQs

Is TiviMate free on Android TV?

TiviMate is free to install and use for the essentials. A paid Premium upgrade adds extras such as more than one playlist, recording and a few customisation options.

Do I need to sideload anything on Google TV?

Usually not. The recommended players are in Google Play, so you install them like any other app. That's the main reason Android TV is the easiest IPTV platform.

Which Android TV device is best for IPTV?

The Nvidia Shield is the fastest. The Google TV Streamer is a great all-rounder with built-in Ethernet. A Chromecast with Google TV works well on a budget if you keep its storage tidy.

Can I use my Google account on several TVs?

Yes. Google Play lets you install the same player on every Android TV in the house. Your plan decides how many of those screens can stream together.

My Sony TV runs Google TV. Does this guide apply?

Yes. Sony, TCL, Philips and most Hisense Google TVs follow exactly the steps above. Only Hisense TVs running VIDAA need a different approach.

Is Android TV better than a Firestick for IPTV?

For most people, yes: the apps come from Google Play, there's no developer menu to unlock, and newer Fire TV sticks no longer allow outside apps at all.

Ready to Try It on Your Google TV?

Request a test line, add it in TiviMate as shown above, and spend the next 24 hours seeing how it runs on your setup.
